Pottery - Majolica Wine Cup - Tall Sheep Pottery - Majolica Wine Cup - Tall Sheep

ABOUT:
Majolica is a style of pottery that uses a colored clay base (in this case terracotta) and a white opaque glaze over that. On top of that designs are painted. Of course I like sheep but you'll see many other themes in what I have on the mugs, cups and dinnerware.

Here we have my tall sheep. I was doodling birds with tall legs one day and they eventually turned to sheep (as many of my doodles do). Voila! Tall sheep.

SIZE and USE:
This cup I've designed the shape to be much like the stemless wine cups. I'm a terminal clutz and stems just make me worse so these are about perfect. Stable and I'm less likely to lose a glass of wine. It holds about 8-9 ounces of your favorite wine.

Each item is individually hand made and glazed well. I make these items to be used. This is food safe. It is also microwave safe - Safe for top rack of the dishwasher. Though, considerate use is always recommended with any handmade one of a kind item.

PROCESS:
This is a wheel thrown terracotta cup with majolica style glazes. I have formed each one by hand on a potter's wheel. I've made pottery for a long time so each one is quite similar but there are variations in the exact form of the piece and in the painting.

Everything is made to last and fired in a kiln. Then I choose a series of glazes and colors that will help bring out the whimsy and personality of each design. I try to stick to the same glazes for each piece but I have a habit of occasionally going off script. It is then given it's second trip into the hot hot kiln to make it the sexy little item it is today.make it the sexy little item it is today.

I've always loved moths. Not the kind that eat wool or those pantry moths that freak me out when I open up a container of flour. I like the giant moths and the little moths. The ones I see in plants or hanging on my doorway in the morning. Luna Moths are some of my favorites because of their spectacular color and size... and that they can be used to make silk.

Majolica is a style of pottery that uses a colored clay base (in this case terracotta) and a white opaque glaze over that. On top of that designs are painted. Of course I like sheep but you'll see many other themes in what I have on the mugs, cups and dinnerware.

This style of sheep is reminiscent of my old pottery. I've been making this style of sheep design since the late 1990's. Whimsical and happy.

SIZE and USE:
I've come to prefer the mugs (cups) without handles following the old adage "if it's too hot to touch, it's too hot to drink". This cup holds approximately 9-10 ounces of your favorite tea, coffee, whiskey... What's in your cup?

Each item is individually hand made and glazed well. I make these items to be used. This is food safe. It is also microwave safe - Safe for top rack of the dishwasher. Though, considerate use is always recommended with any handmade one of a kind item.

Beetles are a source of fascination. There's these little blue ones that seem to pop up out of no where. I love seeing them and they just had to be on my pottery too just to remind me of all those summer and fall days that they appear.

Pottery - Majolica Tripod Mug - Sheep on Orange Pottery - Majolica Tripod Mug - Sheep on Orange

ABOUT:
This is a handbuilt terracotta mug. My little hands have formed and created each individual one. More so than my wheel thrown mugs and cups, these are really individual because of that. These are exactly what they are and they are perfect in every way that any hand made item is meant to be. It's got 3 well placed stable feet. If you use a mug warmer, even though the bottom of the mug is up off the warmer, it still keeps your drink warm!
