My sparkly tulip
Tuesday, August 21st, 2007I finally spun up my Tulip fiber (I have just resigned myself to the fact that I will always be behind!) and am so happy with the final product.
When I first got my fiber I immediately thought of my close friend and how much she would love the gorgeous colors. And, since she’s due to have a baby (in 7 days!) and her birthday is coming up, I thought I would use the Tulip to spin up a special yarn for her and knit it up for part of her birthday gift. With this in mind, I decided to spin a slightly thick and thin single as thin as I could currently get on my Louet, and then ply it with something to keep as much yardage as possible. So I spun the single (pretty!) and then thought I needed something black with which to ply. And something a little bit sparkly, because a new mom needs to feel pretty, at least some of the time, right? So I went to the LYS and they had a sale (yay) and I found a lonely skein of Rowan Kidsilk Night, and thought “perfect!” And it is. Thanks Amy, I think this is one of my favorite yarns I have ever spun:
Here it is closeup:
And hanging on my gate, in it’s full, cushy, glory:
I got 227 yds in the skein, and there was a little bit of my singles left over. After plying the yarn was perfectly balanced (I LOVE when that happens) so of course I had to do a little celebration dance. (Or maybe I should wait until I get to July’s fiber for that? Ha ha.) I was a little concerned about running out of the Kidsilk but I wasn’t about to buy a second skein (even on sale, ouch). It is definitely pretty though, and is super soft and lofty… I think I will use the Kidsilk again in the same way. I can’t wait to knit it up!
Any suggestions for patterns? I was thinking maybe just a simple drop stitch scarf, and let the yarn do all the work.
Spunky Junky
Tuesday, July 24th, 2007February’s ‘Forecast’ was my first offering from the Spunky Club. Being a new spinner, I thought the Club would be a good way to try different fibers and techniques and learn all I could. I spun the Forecast and plied it in chained singles and then knit a pair of rather funky socks.

The March offering, Dandy Lion, was bright and happy. It said ‘baby’ to me so I plied it again in chained singles and then knit a baby hat. Too cute, eh?
You’d think by the time the April offering came that I’d have had enough practice with chained singles but, feeling the need for more practice, I spun Strawberry Fields into sock yarn. I can’t say it was a very good job and I really haven’t enjoyed knitting with it. But putting the finished sock on my foot gave me the needed push to keep going. There will be pair of socks in my future.

The June offering may be my favorite of all as it is ‘my colors’. This time I stepped outside my comfort zone (and I feel I’ve been getting a better handle on control) and spun Nightshade into a single. They were lightly steamed to relax and set the twist and I was so pleased with the results. A small shawl (the skein is about 400 yds) is in my near future.
July’s Tulip was another favorite of mine and I spun it in a simple two ply and gave it a good soaking. It’s soft, yummy and will be just perfect for a fun, thin (only 280 yds), but warm scarf for my black coat.

I have only been spinning on a wheel since November, but I have spun a lot of fiber as practice and to learn the charateristics of different breeds. Amy’s fiber is consistantly nice in texture and color. I have enjoyed using it to learn techniques that enhance my abilities and I look forward to my next fix!
My Tulip
Thursday, July 12th, 2007This means that I’m all caught up with the fiber-of-the-month, and am ready to start July with a clean slate (pay no attention to those other four bundles I just ordered… har!).

Blogged here, and Flickr photos here. I totally forgot I intended to ply this with a thread, but I really like the way it came out. No set ideas of what I’m going to knit with it… I have a friend who just moved to a colder climate, who has a birthday in a few weeks. I made her some Knucks last year out of Opal Ladybug, and I’m thinking that this might be a good complimenting yarn with which to make her a hat. But I did just knit six baby hats last month and I’m feeling just a wee bit “hatted” out.
Whoops– note to self: posts show up better if you hit “publish” instead of “save”. Can I blame Ravelry for my fried brain…? ;p
Thanks y’all,
Lorena
Tulip Beauty
Wednesday, July 11th, 2007Ohh, the colors in the tulip bfl are intense and gorgeous. I wouldn’t choose these colors off of a web site, but that is the beauty of being in a fiber club. I loved spinning this soft, fluffy yarn. And the colors kept me entranced!
The 2 ply yarn turned out to be a thick yarn weight. I am hoping to knit some warm socks out of this!
Nightshade laceweight
Tuesday, July 10th, 2007I spun this up for the Tour de Fleece. It came out to be mostly laceweight and super fluffy and smooshy and I just want to snuggle it all day! I had so much fun spinning this. The fiber was beautiful to work with and the colors are so very yummy!
