Spunky Junky

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

February’s ‘Forecast’ was my first offering from the Spunky Club. Being a new spinner, I thought the Club would be a good way to try different fibers and techniques and learn all I could. I spun the Forecast and plied it in chained singles and then knit a pair of rather funky socks.

The March offering, Dandy Lion, was bright and happy. It said ‘baby’ to me so I plied it again in chained singles and then knit a baby hat. Too cute, eh?

You’d think by the time the April offering came that I’d have had enough practice with chained singles but, feeling the need for more practice, I spun Strawberry Fields into sock yarn. I can’t say it was a very good job and I really haven’t enjoyed knitting with it. But putting the finished sock on my foot gave me the needed push to keep going. There will be pair of socks in my future.

The June offering may be my favorite of all as it is ‘my colors’. This time I stepped outside my comfort zone (and I feel I’ve been getting a better handle on control) and spun Nightshade into a single. They were lightly steamed to relax and set the twist and I was so pleased with the results. A small shawl (the skein is about 400 yds) is in my near future.

July’s Tulip was another favorite of mine and I spun it in a simple two ply and gave it a good soaking. It’s soft, yummy and will be just perfect for a fun, thin (only 280 yds), but warm scarf for my black coat.

I have only been spinning on a wheel since November, but I have spun a lot of fiber as practice and to learn the charateristics of different breeds. Amy’s fiber is consistantly nice in texture and color. I have enjoyed using it to learn techniques that enhance my abilities and I look forward to my next fix!

Catching up…

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

Hi everyone!

I have been loving seeing all of the gorgeous yarns being posted. I finally had a chance to spin up my first two installments from the club (April & May). Here is my Strawberry Fields, I decided to split the roving lengthways and parallel spin it to get contrasty candy stripes for some bulky singles. I ended up with 60 yards of slightly thick n’ thin bulky weight.

I also spun up the Nightshade Coopworth roving into a singles yarn. I loved the color variation and wanted to keep it that way, so singles it is. This one I spun about a worsted weight, it’s about 103 yards.

Can’t wait to see what next month brings! I still have to post pics on my blog, but I was excited to finally get to post here.

My Strawberry Fields

Monday, June 4th, 2007

In true bubblehead fashion, I can not for the life of me find the paper that came with this. Could somebody remind me please what kind of wool it is? I was thinking Superwash Merino, but then thought that maybe I was thinking of Dandy Lion. Anyway, thanks in advance (I’d like to add that info to my blog post about the yarn). I will staple the Nightshade paper to my forehead.

My Flickr photos are here. Does anyone else take process photos, from start to finish? I like to see the stages of development.

Now off to finish some alpaca that’s on the wheel now, and then I’ll start on Nightshade!

Finished My Strawberries

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

Finished plying the purty pink and green Spunky. Just in time since the new selection should be arriving any day now.

I am thinking this will be a pair of gloves someday. Won’t be knitting them til it gets colder out though :) I navajo plied it and am guessing it is an aran weight yarn.

I’m new to spinning, having purchased my wheel at Rhinebeck last October and am really enjoying it!  With the Strawberry Fields fiber, I took half of the fiber and split the colors.

The other half I just went with the mix of colors, and then I plied it into 2 balls.  But I don’t have pictures of it yet!   And now Flickr’s having a massage!  I love seeing everyone else’s work!  I can’t wait to start on this month’s fiber!

‘cos I’m going to Strawberry Fields:

SF close 2

I was able to spin my April fiber this past weekend.

The name was dead on accurate as I expected to smell strawberries every time I sniffed it. It actually caused a berry craving…

Strawberry Sunday

So of course I had to buy some.
