Nightshade Singles

A few weeks ago I shared with you how much I have enjoyed each and every Spunky offering. I’ve been spinning Celebration with a project in mind and I’ll tell you about that later, but today I want to show you my finished Nightshade Forest Canopy. It’s spun singles, fingering weight, about 400 yds.

February’s ‘Forecast’ was my first offering from the Spunky Club. Being a new spinner, I thought the Club would be a good way to try different fibers and techniques and learn all I could. I spun the Forecast and plied it in chained singles and then knit a pair of rather funky socks.

The March offering, Dandy Lion, was bright and happy. It said ‘baby’ to me so I plied it again in chained singles and then knit a baby hat. Too cute, eh?

You’d think by the time the April offering came that I’d have had enough practice with chained singles but, feeling the need for more practice, I spun Strawberry Fields into sock yarn. I can’t say it was a very good job and I really haven’t enjoyed knitting with it. But putting the finished sock on my foot gave me the needed push to keep going. There will be pair of socks in my future.

The June offering may be my favorite of all as it is ‘my colors’. This time I stepped outside my comfort zone (and I feel I’ve been getting a better handle on control) and spun Nightshade into a single. They were lightly steamed to relax and set the twist and I was so pleased with the results. A small shawl (the skein is about 400 yds) is in my near future.

July’s Tulip was another favorite of mine and I spun it in a simple two ply and gave it a good soaking. It’s soft, yummy and will be just perfect for a fun, thin (only 280 yds), but warm scarf for my black coat.

I have only been spinning on a wheel since November, but I have spun a lot of fiber as practice and to learn the charateristics of different breeds. Amy’s fiber is consistantly nice in texture and color. I have enjoyed using it to learn techniques that enhance my abilities and I look forward to my next fix!

A little behind the curve…

Howdy! I’m new here–I just joined the club in May. I finished spinning my first club offering, Nightshade, this morning.

nsbobbin

I have about a bobbin and a half of singles. They aren’t quite as consistent as I’d hoped, so I’m going to try Navajo-plying them. I’ve only attempted this once before, so wish me luck!

One down and one to go, Nightshade is knitting up with a Trekking effect.

Oops!  I forgot to sign my post so you know whose sock it is!  Sorry about that Margene.

Bobbin full of Singles

In an effort to learn more about spinning techniques, I decided to try my hand at ’singles’ spinning. I predrafted just a bit and worked at a slow pace, only adding a bit of twist. The swatch in the picture was made from a test skein and I love the way it knitted up. The singles will sit on the bobbin for a few days in hopes they will relax and I can skein them next week. I confess to being a bit worried…did I over twist, undertwist or get it just right? I’ll keep you posted.

It is so much fun to see results of everyone’s spinning. Amy’s fiber is some of the very best I’ve ever spun (in my short time as a spinner). It would be wonderful if on your post to the blog you could put your name and blog address if you have one. Then we’ll know who you are. This blog is a nice way to find others who enjoy spinning Club fiber.

Hey, Amy! How about a link to the Flickr group on the side bar? Thank you so much for a wonderful fiber experience. I also have one bobbin of the BFL spun and can’t wait to ply it!!

nightshade spun

250 yards/ 4 oz.
sport/DK weight
singles yarn

I love the colors of this one, Amy! The lavender, in particular, made me happy each time I came across it.

Oddly, this is the first time I’d ever spun Coopworth. I liked the prep a lot. I’m all about the roving (as opposed to top) lately, and the fact that it was quite narrow was handy. I just pre-drafted/attenuated it a bit and spun from the end. I got a fairly even single that’s as balanced as a single can be. Not even 1/4 twist of the skein when hung up.

I’m thinking I could use this in the yoke of a sweater, but I always think that. :)

ETA:  Here’s some great info on spinning singles yarns.
