October del 2008 - <title>Boogie Knits Boogie Knits

It has been said a few times recently that I make a lot of yarn….
It’s also been said that I don’t post that yarn.
Both of those statements may in fact be true. I have a tendency to make a ton of singles and let them sit around for a while and then ply them when I need bobbins. Or when I need the yarn. By the time I ply, wash and the skein is dry…I’m over it. I tend to just put it in my stash and don’t pull it out or photograph it until I’m good and ready to use it. If you don’t know by now, I’m horrible at blogging. I forget to photograph all sorts of things. I rarely pull out the camera when I should. Well, I have a few yarns finished so I decided to pull out the camera and show you that I do make yarn.

This is Mid twist, Romney singles made from a fiber that I received from David.

I love Romney. I really love Romney singles. For this yarn I wasn’t going for really low twist singles and I didn’t really want to use energized singles. So I made a relatively twisty yarn and then I beat it up and lightly fulled it. This way it’s still got energy but not so much that it drives me nuts when I’m knitting it. I’m thinking this will make an incredible lace shawl. I have a lot so I’m thinking really big shawl…

This is a 2 ply superwash from fiber that I got from Sara

I fairly well didn’t pay much attention to one of the plies. Late night spinning at it’s finest. But the second ply was lovely and it’s all plied now and it won’t matter one whit once it’s knit into some warm hat or mittens.

Next up is a light sport weight yarn. I bought the fiber from Etsy.

This yarn had 3 layers (grey, burgundy and teal) of Merino. It came out pretty well and quite a lovely heathery color. It looks odd in the photo but in real life it’s quite nice and heathery. There are no plans for this. I had originally thought socks, but it’s a little thin. I like my socks thicker so my feet don’t freeze. Though I make still make socks and use them for fancy dress since thinner socks fit better with my Mary Janes.

Finally, I’ll give you a peek at the box where I toss my bobbins.

I’ve made notes on Flickr for those that are curious.

I think I was bitten…. Or my feet are cold and my hands don’t want to do any darning of holey socks. Really, darning is a crap job and I do a crap job darning my socks. Good thing I don’t have sensitive feet. Do you want to feel good about your darning abilities and patience?

Yeah, that’s sad isn’t it? I just crochet the holes together and it’s so not pretty at all. It works but once the holes are too numerous or large, I stop darning. In most cases, I would much rather make a new pair. I know there are going to be people telling me to save yarn and to learn how to darn right. Again, I’d rather make a new pair. So recently, I did.

I finished these lovely things from yarn that David had made me in our swap.

I have enough left to make a second pair. I’ll probably wait until the first ones wear out and then I’ll do another pair. I love these. I needed green socks in a serious way. And these have silk in them too. Just lovely.

Then I had to start these in Pumpkin Juice.

I know I said Pumpkin Juice was for Baby Boogie mittens but I lied….I really decided I needed them for me and Baby Boogie needed to have a thicker yarn for her hat….Like how I justified that?

We had a little spin in at the shop over the weekend. It was a Ravelry announced event so everyone would have a chance to meet David and to have a Spin in. We haven’t had one of those at the shop in a while. I’d love to have these once a month or so. It’s a really nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Here’s a look at everyone that I could see in one shot

I’m going to head over to flickr and label everyone soon.

My project of the day was some lovely merino Fiber that I got from David on a spindle that he brought me as well. The spindle is made of Hairy Oak and is a sweet sweet spin. I was planning on mittens but another 4 ounces showed up so I might be making a vest out of this or maybe a Baby Boogie sweater….We’ll see when it’s all done. It may just end up being socks and hats and mittens….

I’d like to do more Spin ins. It was great to see everyone so I’ll make sure to announce it here when it’s all set up. My goal for next week is to sit down and look at the shop schedule for the rest of winter (probably into April) and set up all the classes and hopefully a couple more spin ins. I’ll let you all know when it’s set up.

I’ve started this year’s round of mittens….Started because one pair is already amongst the missing. My kids are obviously talented and I’m dense. I gave both girls their mittens, took the photos and they ran off with mittens on, happy and wanting to play with mittens on. This is normal, we do this every year.

The other thing we do every year is search and search and search for those mittens. One of these days I swear I will learn my lesson and not let them run off with the mittens. Of course, this is the first year that we lost the mittens so quickly. Usually we get to wear them outside a few times. We’ve not even had a snow storm and I already have to replace mittens. Next year I’m going to pull the mittens off their hands as soon as the photos are done.

These are the missing ones and will be replaced by ones in this:

Pumpkin Juice batts from Enchanted Knoll.
It’s a light worsted 3 ply coming in at around 350 yards. I’ll have enough of this to make mittens and a hat. Which she’s been asking for a new hat too. Then again, whenever I’m spinning something, she makes big plans for it…for herself.

Waste Not Want Not Wednesday…
I know it’s not really Wednesday the 22nd. I did have to check to just be sure but I know the day…barely. I got waylaid yesterday and completely forgot the day and that I was going to post here.
Leaves. Some people probably don’t need to worry about leaves and well, they’re basically free gifts of nature if you do have them.

So when they get to the point that they are a foot tall in your driveway and you need to get rid of them….

What do you do?

  • Bag them and use them as extra insulation around the base of your house
  • Mulch
  • Compost
  • Fill that Scarecrow
  • Use them to bed down plants that need more protection over the winter.

    What do you do?
